San Lorenzo, Ahuachapán Norte – The traditional Red
Baron Jocote Festival will take place in the San Lorenzo district on Sunday,
April 7th, starting at 8:00 AM, despite a one-month delay in the production of
this characteristic fruit.
The festival will feature a tour of the
fruit plantations, which is one of the two identity products of the district,
along with loroco. The festival will be centered in the Plaza de San Lorenzo,
where dozens of entrepreneurs will offer a variety of dishes derived from the
red baron jocote, including sauces, snacks, soft drinks, and wine. More than
1,000 manzanas of land are cultivated with this product in the district, which
yields about 1.5 million pounds of red baron jocote each season.
The season for this fruit is between
February and May. "For us, the red baron jocote is the product that gives
us local economic development; it is the economic development for the entire
population of San Lorenzo because we are the owners of the plantations; but we
also benefit the people who work with us, who receive a salary," Jorge
Ortiz, one of the producers, told a television station.
The activity began to be carried out
within the framework of the One Village, One Product work methodology, which
was promoted in 2010 by the mayor's office, the Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO), and the National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (CONAMYPE).
"In terms of production, 80% of the carrying
capacity of the trees is relatively good, it is a fairly high production. In
terms of harvest times, there is a one-month lag, we are one month behind due
to climate change. The rains at the end of winter caused the planting to be
delayed by a month; but there is enough jocote for all Salvadoran
brothers," producer Omar Fajardo told the same television station.
Antonia Rivas said that the product is scarce as she looked to buy it in the markets of the Ahuachapán district, where she had difficulty finding it. The few that were available were being sold at $2 per hundred, which confirmed Fajardo's statements. "It is still expensive; in other years, by this time, there is already an abundance," said the housewife. The festival in the San Lorenzo district is organized by the mayor's office, producers, and entrepreneurs.
