The gastronomy of El Salvador

 



The gastronomy of El Salvador is very diverse, even within the territory, the taste of typical dishes varies, such as pupusas, whose accompaniments vary depending on the region of the country.

If consumed in the western or central part of the country, pupusas are accompanied by natural tomato sauce and curtido (made of cabbage and other vegetables), while in the east, pupusas are usually accompanied by Worcestershire sauce and curtido (cabbage with mayonnaise).

Although Salvadorans often eat their dishes in a peculiar way, they also create new combinations when it comes to consuming their food, whether typical or not. In this article, we tell you about some of the uncommon foods that Salvadorans consume.

 

Milk with toasted tortilla

Milk is one of the most nutritious foods there is, but in some places in El Salvador, it is often consumed accompanied by toasted tortilla and salt.




The preparation of this dish consists of boiling the milk, then adding the toasted tortilla in small pieces, similar to cereal, and then the salt.

French bread or tortilla with sugar

Another exotic food consumed by Salvadorans is bread or tortilla with sugar. Some diners spread butter on the bread or tortilla before sprinkling sugar, which would give it double the flavor; however, it is more common to eat the bread or tortilla alone with sugar.

Minuta with French bread


Minuta is one of the most cherished foods by Salvadorans, its sweet or savory flavors bring happiness and freshness to whoever eats them. However, there are those who prefer to give it a simple touch by accompanying it with French bread.

French bread with fried plantain

This dish is common in Salvadoran breakfasts or dinners, as both plantains and French bread are usually eaten in the first or last meal of the day.

There are two types of Salvadorans: those who eat fried plantains accompanied by French bread and those who put pieces of fried plantains in the French bread.

In case a person does not tolerate this type of combination, there are those who prefer to mix the fried plantain with sugar grains to give an extreme sweetness to the palate.

Chicken tamale with lemon and salt

Tamale is a very common dish in El Salvador, usually Salvadorans eat it during the weekend accompanied by sweet bread.





However, some people prefer to accompany the tamale with a more acidic flavor: with lemon and salt. Would you try it?

Chayote is a vegetable used in different ways in El Salvador, in soups, fillings, and as a drink, the latter option being the least popular in the country.
