Parque
Cuscatlán welcomes at least 780,000 annual visitors. This Sunday marked the
85th anniversary of Parque Cuscatlán, celebrated in a festive event organized
by the Parque Cuscatlán Foundation (FUNDAPARC) and the Municipality of San
Salvador, with support from the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID), Glasswing International, and other partners of Parque
Cuscatlán.
Mayu
Ferrufino, director of the Parque Cuscatlán Foundation, highlighted the
importance of urban parks as invaluable assets for any city. "Parque
Cuscatlán not only provides green spaces for relaxation and recreation but also
promotes the physical and mental health of the population, fosters social
cohesion, and preserves urban biodiversity," expressed Ferrufino.
Meanwhile,
Cleark Villatoro, park administrator on behalf of the Municipality of San
Salvador, emphasized the relevance of Parque Cuscatlán as a "green
treasure in the heart of the city," which has provided moments of joy and
well-being to entire generations of Salvadorans. During the park's
85th-anniversary celebration, visitors enjoyed a variety of activities such as
rock climbing, clown shows, plant-seeding workshops, and face painting. With
over 780,000 visits per year, Parque Cuscatlán continues to be a sanctuary for
Salvadoran families, a place to share, play, and enjoy amidst the city.
City
Symbol
Opened on
March 1, 1939, Parque Cuscatlán has been an emblematic symbol in the heart of
the city, reflecting the historical and cultural development of San Salvador.
With its French Neoclassical design, the park has been a recreational space for
Salvadoran families, offering moments of leisure and connection with nature
over the years.
The park
holds two UNESCO blue seals for the Monument to Memory and Truth and the
National Exhibition Hall "Salarrué," solidifying its status as an
important historical and cultural heritage of the city. In an effort to promote
social integration and equality, as well as the right to the city and the need
for accessible public spaces, Parque Cuscatlán underwent a remodeling process
between 2017 and 2019. This renovation, made possible by contributions from The
Howard G. Buffett Foundation, USAID, the Municipality of San Salvador, and
Glasswing International, culminated in its reopening on September 17, 2019,
revitalizing its role as a green lung amidst the urban landscape.
Parque Cuscatlán is a recreational space of approximately 71,000 square meters, housing over 900 trees of different species. The venue welcomes around 780,000 visitors per year.
