SAN SALVADOR —
Salvadorans will choose their next president, vice president,
and Congress on Sunday, February 4.
In the presidential elections, the current
president, Nayib Bukele, competes with five other candidates: Manuel Flores
from the left-wing Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN);
Joel Sánchez from Alianza Republicana Nacionalista de El Salvador (ARENA); Luis
Parada from Nuestro tiempo; José Renderos from Fuerza Solidaria; and Marina
Murillo from Fraternidad Patriotica Salvadoreña.
To win in the first round, one of the presidential
candidates must obtain 50% of the votes in their favor plus one more vote.
Bukele and his party, Nuevas Ideas, lead in the intention to vote, according to
recent public opinion polls.
In the event that Bukele wins the presidential
election, he will become the first president in recent Salvadoran history to be
re-elected for a second term. The Salvadoran Constitution prohibits continuous
re-election. The last time a president sought re-election in El Salvador was in
1944.
Salvadorans will also choose the next Congress. Ten
political parties are participating in this contest. Recently, El Salvador
reduced the number of deputies from 84 to 60 and the number of municipalities
from 262 to 44. The vote for municipal leaders will be on March 3.
More than 6.2 million people are registered to
vote.
Salvadorans over 18 years of age whose residence is
registered in El Salvador should check the voting center assigned by the
Tribunal Supremo Electoral at this link.
The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
It is mandatory for registered voters to cast their votes with a legible
identification document.
Salvadorans residing abroad can vote online from
January 6 to February 4, provided that their address—according to their
identification document—is registered abroad.
If they live abroad but their address is still
registered in El Salvador, the TSE will have several in-person voting centers
available on the day of the election.
At this link, you can check the list of in-person voting centers available in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and other countries.
